For the night is dark and full of terrors.
For some people, today is Easter Sunday. But, for me, today is Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere day. I am not only addicted to the books and the show, but also the promos for the show. I’m not gonna lie, this blog is gonna be a bit of a puff piece, praising HBO.
I had the distinct pleasure to work with HBO to edit a 20 minute Critics preview and several promos for the first season of Game of Thrones. And, I have to say, it was one of the highlights of my editorial career. Not only because I find Game of Thrones to be an incredible show in every aspect, but because I have the upmost respect for the marketing team at HBO. Working with HBO is one of those incredible opportunities, for one, because their content is some of the best on television, but also because the HBO marketing team is always willing to take risks with their promos and thus, get incredible results. And, they were an absolute pleasure to work with, something I can’t say about a lot of other companies in the film and TV marketing business.
This trailer that I have chosen for my blog is where I feel they have taken one of those risks, and it yielded brilliant results. Combining the medieval imagery from Game of Thrones, with the futuristic sonic sound of Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy soundtrack makes for total stimulatory bliss. Not to mention that Game of Thrones is one of my favorite shows and the Tron:Legacy Soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks. It’s like the HBO marketing is reading my mind as to what I think perfection would be. OMG, it’s just so awesome!
They brilliantly open up on the dragon’s POV flying over the water to tease us as to what the dragons will look like before they actually show us later in the promo. Then our dragon makes eye contact with Daenerys, revealing our most powerful player in the season, which immediately gave me chills of joy. We are then taken on a journey of quick glimpses of all of our players in this season and tastes of what they plan to do. And how each plans to take the throne. Each idea different from the last, but all with one goal in mind. But, with only one result of a potential all out war if they all collide. HBO uses this trailer to wet our appetites by just revealing our characters plans of attack and the tools that each party will use, revealing nothing about who will win or who will lose, all while stimulating our visual senses through masterful edits cut seamlessly to the Daft Punk track.
I sometimes wish there was a DVR setting to record the promos between shows and movies on HBO, because they never disappoint and always make you want to watch. Like editorial candy for my eyes. My hats off to you HBO, I know what is going to happen in this season having read the book, and yet with the promos I have seen, I can’t wait to see how you do it. It was a pleasure to be able to work with HBO when I did, and I know they will keep up the good work. And, I will continue to watch and eagerly anticipate what will come next.
